Time Traveler Caught in Museum Photo?

Time Traveler Caught in Museum Photo?

“Reopening of the South Fork Bridge after flood in Nov. 1940. 1941 (?)”
It’s the short description for the photograph shown at the virtual Bralorne Pioneer Museum, from British Columbia, Canada. The image can be seen specifically on this page (scroll down to the middle), among other items of the online exhibit. Did you notice anything out of place? Or perhaps, out of time?

The man with what appears to be very modern sunglasses seems to be wearing a stamped T-shirt with a nice sweater, all the while holding a portable compact camera!

Internet people reached to the obvious conclusion: it’s a time traveller caught on camera on 1940! Finally, we have proof!

If the story seems straight out of a movie The Time Shifter and the photo is in itself a great funny find, the most amusing thing i came up with while looking into this – as an Internet person, on the Internet – was the reply for a skeptical, or perhaps somewhat cynical comment on how spurious it would seem the idea that a time traveler would want to visit the reopening of a bridge in some small town in Canada.

Read this on Doc Brown’s voice: “Of course, because we know nothing happened there right? But if we are considering time travel, how can we know if in some other timeline something historical happened right there?”

Indeed! Once you consider time travel, everything changes. But before writing Hollywood scripts, let’s get back to reality and ask again: is the photo evidence of a time traveller?

The source

As noted, the image is indeed available through the official website for Canada’s museums. It was part of the exhibit “Their Past Lives Here” from Bralorne-Pioneer, available to the public since 2004. It was put online since February this year, perhaps before that. And the peculiar “time traveller” image was only noted as such in the end of March, when it was linked on main websites such as FARK.

Given the source, we would assume the photo is authentic, and correctly dated to c.1940. Indeed, an Error Level Analysis suggests the image was not digitally tampered with, or at least that if it was, the author was smart enough to normalize the error across the whole thing. It’s a good job, if it was a job. And again, given the source, we would assume it was not a job.

So, how do we explain the man out of time?

  1. This is crazy and mind blowing. In the image it looks as if a lady is actually looking at the man/time traveller. The mans glasses also look quite futuristic. He also seems to be holding what looks like a camera in his hand because you can clearly see what looks like a cylindricle lens in the image.

  3. Well, first off the camera does not look like a digital one to me, it looks like an old fashioned one my grandmother used to have when I was a kid. Secondly, the shirt he is wearing looks to be a thin knitted sweater, and those would be easily done in 1940. Thirdly, the sun glasses obviously are older ones with some side pieces put on. Anyone who thinks this is a time traveler is grasping just a bit.

  5. "Internet people" couldn't tell that he is wearing a tweed jacket, glacier classes, knit Michigan sweater, and holding a film camera? It's not like they had that stuff in the 40's.

  6. Well the man on the left of the pic appears to be holding some sort of rectangular thing, could that be a camera too? this picture does look a bit odd.

  7. The glasses look very similar to Rayban Wayfarers (popular since the early 50's) and do not have side-pieces, that's a shadow around his eye. The camera he's holding looks like a Brownie and they were wildly popular in the 40's and 50's. His t-shirt has a wide, open neck- not popular now but it was back then. The sweater looks period correct as well. I see nothing that places him out of his time. We're simply looking at a young man that stands out because he's not wearing a derby and suit like those around him.

  8. I don't think he is a time traveler. He is wearing a Michigan sweater, glacier sun glasses and a folding bellows film camera.

  10. Anyhow, time travel is a multiverse. Each time you hit it, you end up on another timeline. Simply, if i have memories and change the past, the memories are evidence of another timeline. Morale? It looks all like a tape-vehicle. If you record on a old tape, not because the info in it is old does this mean it has to be past because you changed version recording it in the present, all you can do in my strong opinion is just turn all present informations statements and quantums in a fake illusion to believe that something's once happened, though it cannot be manipulated in reality.
