In 1972, a geomagnetic storm provoked by a solar flare knocked out long-distance telephone communication across the US state of Illinois. And in 1989, another storm plunged six million people into darkness across the Canadian province of Quebec.
Dr Thomson said it was possible infrastructure could be affected this time, but stressed: "The X-flare that was observed the other day was lower in magnitude than similar flares that have been associated with technological damage such as the loss of the Quebec power grid... and even the large magnetic storm in 2003, which caused some damage to satellites in orbit."
Scientists will have around half an hour's notice that the wave of charged particles is about to hit the Earth's magnetic shield.
This is taken from the point at which a Nasa satellite called Ace (the Advanced Composition Explorer) registers the solar radiation on its instruments: "We're sitting waiting for that event to happen," said Dr Thomson.
Researchers say the Sun has been awakening after a period of several years of low activity.

Wow. There was a large power outage in my city last night. I also thought it was odd that the power company didn't inform us about the cause, which is odd. Also large scale power outages normally make radio news pretty quick. There was NOTHING! Perhaps the Sun was the cause and they didn't want anyone to know that.....
ReplyDeletePeople need to prepare for these outages. We are all so spoiled as we sit with our computers and cable tv and food in the fridge. Not mention HOT water in our tanks. We the people of most of the world are going to go into a panic if there is no electric for an extended period of time. I know I need to make a purchase of a radio with batteries or a handcrank type. I am stocking up on many of the foods that I think will be hard to come by if this horrific event happens.

and there was the 6.3 earthquake at Christchurch, New Zealand.

Haiti and Chilli both got affected after some solar flares, looks like Christchurch was the same thing.
This information I believe could seriously help natural disaster risk mitigation tactics.
